WWII Memorial dedication is May 29 years ago
The dedication of the World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C., will take place at 2 p.m. May 29 during the National World War II Reunion festival, which runs May 27-30. Gates will open sometime between 9 and 11 a.m.
The memorial honors the sacrifices of American soldiers, air crews, sailors, and their families.
Two 43-foot arches with bronze columns and eagles will lead onto a memorial plaza featuring 56 granite pillars, each representing the contribution of U.S. states, territories, and the District of Columbia. A field of 4,000 gold stars on a nearby wall will commemorate the more than 400,000 Americans who lost their lives.
