New member searches for battalion commander

I was a member of the 99th Infantry Division, 393rd Regiment, Third Battalion, during the crossing of the bridge at Remagen and Ruhr Pocket and until the end of the war in Germany.

I am searching for my battalion commander, Major Elmer Schmerier and someone told me to write to the Checkerboard.
