Jose Lopez dies
Congressional Medal of Honor recipient Jose M. Lopez, 94, died May 16, 2005.
Born in Mexico, he lived in the El Paso TX, area.
A sergeant, Lopez earned the MOH in combat near Krinkelt, Belgium, Dec. 17. 1944.
While serving in the 2nd Infantry Division, Lopez hand carried a machine gun to a shallow hole and gave support for American troops to withdraw. He killed more than 100 German soldiers.
Lopez had been in poor health for several months. He often met with 99th veterans over the years because the two divisions served together in blunting the Nazi onslaught during the first 48 hours of the Battle of the Bulge.
