John Bender, D/394 years ago

New member, D/394

I was a member of Company D, 394th Regiment from the time we arrived at Camp Van Dorn MS in 1942 until most of us were transferred in 1943 to the 85th Division (all Pfcs and privates) at Fort Dix NJ.

I was assigned to G Company, 337th Infantry Regiment as a rifleman. We went overseas from Norfolk VA, on Jan. 1, 1944, and landed in North Africa where we took amphibious training.

We then sailed to Naples, Italy, where we eventually went to the front and took part in the drive on Rome. Unfortunately I never got to Rome and was wounded May 17, and my war was over.

I spent the next two years plus in the hospital and was discharged in November 1946. I doubt there is anyone around now who might remember me from the 99th, but if there is I sure would like to hear from them.
