Infantry museum to open in 2009 years ago

The National Infantry Museum and Soldier Center at Patriot Park, Fort Benning, Columbus GA, is slated to open in the spring of 2009.

"The 190,000 square-foot museum is dedicated to the 233-year legacy of valor and sacrifice of the American infantryman," states a postcard sent by the Columbus GA Convention & Visitors Bureau.

The museum will be located on a 200-acre campus linking Columbus and Fort Benning, home of the infantry.

Era-specific galleries ranging in size from 2,700 to 5,600 square feet, will tell the infantry story from pre-Revolutionary times to the present. All galleries open onto a central grand hall large enough to seat 500 for special events.

The Soldier Center will feature a 3-D IMAX theatre, themed restaurant, gift shop, simulator attractions, and classrooms.
