Family needs information about Eddie Zmuda

My family currently is researching our dad's involvement in World War II. Edward "Eddie" Zmuda was originally from Niagara Falls NY, and entered his service at Camp Upton NY, in October 1943.

As a member of I/395 he served as an automatic rifleman in northern France and central Europe. His separation papers show that he arrived June 28, 1944, in Europe, and returned to the U.S. on Sept. 11, 1945.

I'm unsure of what the first date refers to since I thought the 99th didn't arrive in Europe until October 1944. Would he have been involved in the staging camp at Camp Marabout?

The photo above shows him with an unidentified buddy, and appears to have been taken somewhere in Europe. The other picture is an illustration he did while he was going to art school via the GI assistance bill. I am certain this was done from one of his hand-to-hand combat memories.

I would like to hear from anyone who has information on the actions of his group, or of him personally. If Ed were alive today (he died in 1991) I am sure he would have enjoyed reading the Checkerboard.
