Convention entertainment is superb

Along with the usual activities at the annual convention, there was some outstanding entertainment.

The Checkerboard Chorus performed Thursday night. Special music was provided by B.O. and Marilyn Wilkins' daughter, Melanie. She not only sang for a packed house at the concert, she was part of the Memorial Service Friday morning, singing "Thank You," a song adapted for the occasion.

Friday night's function was a Taco Night featuring free tacos and nachos, a cash bar, and the musical entertainment of Sid Fly, a local "cowboy singer."

Fly performed "Don't Forget the Soldier," which he had written. Several members asked for copies and others asked that it be reprinted in the Checkerboard:

Don't Forget the Soldier

Don't ever take for granted

All the bounty of this land

For until you've gone beyond our borders

You might not understand

How beautiful our mountains

How swift our rivers run

How deep and green the valleys

How bright our golden sun

Yet for all of this

America is more than what you see

It's the patriot whose sacrifice

Allows us to be free

So you can march along with fisted hand

And you can burn our flag so dear

But while you enjoy the luxury

Of living without fear

Don't forget the solder

However far away

That lives among our enemy

To grant you one more day.

Sid Fly enjoyed performing for the convention and asked that his addresses be included in this issue of the Checkerboard so members may contact him: 135 River Trail, Castroville TX 78009; e-mail: sidfly@sbcglobal.com.
