Arkansas recognizes Battle of the Bulge veterans

The 99th Infantry Division Association convention next year will be held in Little Rock.

This year, Gov. Mike Huckabee of Arkansas authorized an executive proclamation to recognize veterans who fought in the Ardennes battle (1944-45).

The governor noted that 19,000 U.S. troops lost their lives during the Battle of the Bulge, 42,000 were wounded, and 22,000 were POWs or MIA.

Gov. Huckabee said those figures for the one battle, Battle of the Bulge, were higher than Pearl Harbor, D-Day, Iwo Jima, 9/11, and both Gulf Wars combined. "But we won, at a high price."

He proclaimed Jan. 25, 2005, as Battle of the Bulge Remembrance Day in Arkansas.
