I joined M/395 in January 1945. We were dug-in on a sunken road outside Hofen. I injured my back cutting down trees for cover when we were held in the Remagen bridgehead. I lasted until the end of the Ruhr Valley. It turned out I had a herniated disc. It probably saved my life. After being hospitalized I was put on limited duty and ended up as a guard for a station hospital.
