FINAL ISSUE: Association ceases publication
This is the final edition of the Checkerboard, official publication of the 99th Infantry Division Association.
The board of directors, at the final convention in 2011, voted to discontinue the annual conventions and continue publication of the Checkerboard for a few more months.
According to association treasurer J.R. McIlroy, the association has little money left and membership is dwindling at a rapid pace.
“We have just enough money for one more Checkerboard,” McIlroy said. The small remaining balance will be used for the future upkeep and maintenance on the association’s monument at Krinkelt, Belgium.
Readers interested in obtaining a complete, free copy of Harry Arnold’s “Easy Memories,” may write to McIlroy at PO Box 98, Celina TX 75009, and he will mail you a copy. There is a limited supply and they only are available for the next 30 days, as he is trying to close out the association records.
Two installments of Arnold’s memoir were published in earlier issues of the Checkerboard.
All checks received in the past few months are being returned.
On a personal note, I have enjoyed being part of the 99th Infantry Division Association for more than three decades. I was blessed in my career to have worked alongside former editor Bill Meyer. I also appreciate the privilege of working with so many of you on convention committees. I cherish each friendship. I am humbled that you have accepted me and my family into the 99th fold.
It’s been an honor and a privilege to know each and every one of you.
